The Welding Certification Test Study Guide

The education part of your welding career journey is coming to an end. You’re getting closer to landing that first job, but aren’t quite there yet. What do you have left to do? Well, you need to become a certified welder. Let’s start with the basics:

What is a Welding Certification Test?

A welding certification test is an exam that requires you to demonstrate your welding knowledge by physically performing a weld. Your weld will then be inspected to be sure that it meets AWS requirements.

Where can I get certified?

Where you can get certified will depend on the type of welding you’ve chosen to pursue. You can check the American Welding Society website for testing centers near you. If you have yet to choose a welding specialization, feel free to check out our post on How to Choose Your Specialization.

How can I prepare for the exam?

1) Find out Test Requirements

Make sure you know what is on the exam before you start studying. There’s no shame in contact your teacher or supervisor to be sure you are 100% clear about the test requirements. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

2) Study the Material

Be sure to use whatever materials were provided in class including books, handouts, study guides, or whatever else you may have received. Although this is not a written test, you will need to be well versed in safety precautions and proper procedures. Reading-up on the process can only benefit you.

3) Practice Your Welds

You’re going to need to practice your welds…a lot. Welding is a physically demanding job that requires precision and attention to detail. No matter how well you can regurgitate class information, you won’t receive your certification if you can’t do the task.

4) Get a Good Night Sleep

Like everything else in life, you’ll need a good night sleep in order to perform your best. Trust me, it’s not worth trying to cram any more at this point. Getting in bed on time will be more beneficial to your overall test outcome.

5) Be confident in your own abilities

Take a deep breath and relax. You’ve done everything you can to get yourself ready for this exam. There’s no need to be nervous. Be positive and know that you’re going to do your best.
